2016 Prep – Part Four

Part One

Part Two

Part Three

Ok, you’ve done a lot of work, but you didn’t write any goals… but, now you have goals. The quick check you need to do is to see if what’s in your large 2016 section can be done viably this year.

I usually don’t do that until February. The turning of a year is filled with so much optimism (and unset deadlines) that knowing what’s going to fit isn’t always doable. BUT, in a month or so, a few of those cards will get shifted down to the lower level.

Now you’re wondering, why do I work like this and why does it work for me.

Great questions. You guys are supah smaht.

For years I fought my natural inclination about how to organize my work because of my bosses. They wanted clean desks and files in cabinets and all this other stuff that just id not work for me. years later when i was the boss, I made it clear to my people that their offices could look however they wanted them to AS LONG as they could hand me something right away AND if they won the lottery, they’re system would make sense to a temp.

Fair enough, right?

But, it wasn’t until a few years ago that I found a tool to help people figure out their own systems. I love this book and highly recommend it. I definitely stole some ideas from it.

Organizing For Your Brain Type has a nifty little quiz in the front then tells you what your style is. From there, you only read your style. A lot of it is just lists of ideas.

My style is Innovating. The number one thing for me is, If I can’t see it, it doesn’t exist.

This is why the Warboard has always worked for me. Managing the strategic HR operations for a company can get very “laser focused” but you need to be doing that lasering on about 8 things at once.

The Warboard kept them all front of mind for me.

And now, I’m counting on that same strategy to move my publishing work forward.

So, there you have it – how my year is going to flow based on possible and impossible ideas, all of which I’ve kept on hand for when opportunities arise…a strategic plan based on the four deciding factors I’ve used to move my 2016 in the right direction…the structure to keep me on track…and all my opportunities that are active.

In Part Five I’ll show how I’m using the Organizing For Your Brain Type ideas to make my office (read: tiny corner of my tiny living room) work more efficiently for me.
